Travel to Texas

We left Indiana about 11am December 30 for our Winter Texan experience. This year we traveled from Indiana down I-69 to Indianapolis, and then I- 465 around the east side to I- 65 down to Nashville, TN. Travel was clear except in southern Kentucky when we ran into road construction, and this slowed traffic for about a half an hour. At Nashville we turned west on I- 40 and traveled to Memphis, TN. In Memphis we turned south on I- 55 and drove to a Walmart stop about 1AM 40 miles from the Tennessee line. The next day New Years Eve we traveled from our Walmart stop to I- 12 into Louisiana and then west to I-10 to just west of Beaumont, Texas. We took Exit 829 at Winnie Texas south to Hwy 124 & 87 and on down to the Galveston Texas where we boarded the ferry and took a 2 mile ferry ride across to the other side. This is not our route, as we normally journey through Houston. However our RV neighbor and friends Carl & Diane said we might enjoy this route with the ferry ride. We had hoped to arrive during daylight but arrived just at dusk. They were correct and we suggested to Sherry’s mom and Bennie they take this route when they came mid-January.

We then traveled a couple of miles, and had planned to stay at a Walmart because my App RV overnight said it was RV friendly. However we found there were signs posted that we couldn’t stay.  When we left we took Hwy 6 west to some back country roads where Lola the Liar our GPS said we should, as we traveled toward our destination. Lola was correct this time. (HaHa)  We tried a couple of other Walmart’s, and then decided to get a RV site for the night. After calling and confirming we could stay we got an overnight spot at San Bernard River Park. Great site with friendly folks however we set up after dark, and then checked out about 9am to continue to travel toward Rockport. We arrived New Years Day 2016 at about noon and checked in and set up here for a two month stay.

Quabache SP Bluffton, IN Oct 2015

This park is located about 12 miles from our home and is a great place to get away for a weekend trip. We stayed here October 15 thru 17 and enjoyed great fall weather. Our site #49 was great with lots of room. We enjoyed camp fires two nights and did lots of biking the trails in the park. The fall colors were presented with the trees in full color.

I think we biked about 20 miles during our stay here.

We didn’t travel and camp as much this year because we were downsizing and needed more time at home. See the previous post for our downsizing efforts. The weather also played a big part as we had lots of rain through late June.

Until next time I will be thinking about Driving MS Daisy.
